The donation will benefit more than three thousand people in the communities of Sanarate, San Antonio La Paz, Guastatoya, Palencia, Guatemala, and Jalapa, as well as communities along the Río Plátanos Basin.
Among the species delivered to the communities are the following: Pinus maximinoi, Pinus pseudostrobus, Pinus oocarpa, madre cacao, mahogany, matilisguate, aripín, common cedar, cypress, and alder.
With this large-scale tree delivery, Progreso aims to encourage reforestation activities within communities and provide new generations with experiences to protect the environment. Additionally, it seeks to promote the management of forest plantations and raise awareness among communities about the future benefits of proper forest management.
How was it done?
AgroProgreso carried out a socialization process to raise community awareness about the importance of reforestation. Additionally, it verified the number of beneficiaries to finally deliver the trees for planting in their permanent soil.
This month-long activity involved the Municipal Environmental Management Units of the beneficiary communities, who will support the beneficiaries by providing workshops and follow-up to help them secure future benefits such as forestry incentives and management plans for their forest areas.
These actions foster public-private partnerships between AgroProgreso, municipalities, and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, reaffirming the company’s commitment to establishing teaching and learning processes for plantation management within communities.
Progreso has two nurseries with a total production capacity of two million seedlings per year. These are high-tech Swedish nurseries, utilizing both container and bag production, monitored with guidance from New Mexico State University and the company. Microseed Inc. Both nurseries produce endemic plants native to the region, as well as timber and fruit trees.
