From the Ground to Well-being: Promoting Health and Dignity in Guatemalan Homes

The HogaRES initiative improves health and quality of life in Guatemala by replacing dirt floors with concrete in vulnerable homes.

In Guatemala, respiratory infections and diseases such as diarrhea, gastroenteritis, and intestinal parasitosis are among the leading public health issues.

To address this reality, the HogaRES project was born—an alliance led by Progreso, aimed at improving living conditions for the most vulnerable families by replacing dirt floors with concrete in their homes.

HogaRES is a joint effort by multiple stakeholders committed to social welfare, supported by local governments and social organizations working together to bring about meaningful change in people’s lives.

On September 5, in three communities in San Antonio, Suchitepéquez: Concepción Ixtacapa sector La Conformidad, Concepción Ixtacapa sector Sajquí and Aldea Margaritas del Rosario, 50 families benefited from concrete flooring, improving their quality of life through safer, more hygienic, and dignified living spaces.

To build the floors, various Progreso business units contributed essential materials such as cement, gravel, and sand, while local municipalities provided skilled labor and transportation to move the resources to the communities.

This model of collaboration demonstrates how combining efforts can create a positive impact in the most underserved communities.

Replacing dirt floors with concrete reduces exposure to diseases and fosters safety and emotional stability in homes.

A clean and dignified environment promotes better development for families, especially for children, who are more vulnerable to hygiene-related diseases.

It is important to note that the families benefiting from HogaRES also receive training to maintain and improve their homes, strengthening community resilience and creating long-term sustainable impact.

The implementation of HogaRES has been met with enthusiasm and joy. Neighbors, leaders, and project partners emphasize the importance of initiatives like this in improving living conditions in communities.

The success of this alliance lies not only in the immediate improvement of housing conditions but also in the strengthening of social ties and the creation of new opportunities for communities.

HogaRES demonstrates that working together can make a difference, transforming vulnerable environments into spaces of well-being and dignity.
