At the awards ceremony for the Fourth Edition of the Regional Journalism Award in Sustainability, held on December 10, 2024, in Guatemala City, Progreso reaffirmed its commitment to promoting sustainable development by recognizing the work of journalists and communication students who highlight environmental and social challenges and achievements in the region.
This prestigious award, which has gained importance in Central America, has become a platform to showcase communication projects that generate a positive impact on communities.
The event gathered prominent journalists, thought leaders, and sustainability experts who shared experiences and reflections on the crucial role of journalism in social transformation.
This year, award-winning pieces focused on topics such as wildlife trafficking, water management, and the challenges of landfills in Guatemala, showcasing the rigor and depth of journalistic research in the region.
The jury, composed of renowned international experts such as Almudena Diez, Director General of Diario Responsable; Juan Carlos Iragorri, Director of the “Y Esto No es Todo” podcast; and Eladio González, Editorial Director of Forbes Central America and the Dominican Republic, evaluated the proposals based on their quality, reach, and relevance. First Place: Luisa Laguardia Oliva (Guatemala), with “Wildlife Trafficking: Heading Toward Extinction”.
Second Place: Rodolfo González Mora (Costa Rica), with “Sustainability Special”.
Third Place: José Alberto Barrera Osorio (El Salvador), with “Sustainability: The Invisible Cost of Water”.

Paula Carranza, with “Landfills in Guatemala: An Expanding Environmental and Social Challenge”.
The ceremony included a keynote address, “he Importance of Journalists in the Era of Content Creators”, delivered by Eladio González from Forbes Central America, who highlighted the challenges and opportunities for sustainability journalism in a global context.
According to José Raúl González, CEO of Progreso, the award not only recognizes outstanding journalism but also promotes the dissemination of sustainable practices that inspire positive change.
“Making these stories and good practices visible is essential for the development of our communities and countries. This award serves as a bridge to promote sustainability through communication”, he stated.
With this initiative, Progreso reaffirms its commitment to being a key ally in regional sustainability, promoting a culture of positive change that inspires future generations.
A special invitation is extended to journalists and communication students from Central America and the Caribbean to participate in the fifth edition of the award, scheduled for 2025.
